Drawing Tools

Draw open paths, closed regions, regular shapes, curves, freehand lines, and text.

Units and Measure

Sew Editor defaults to Metric (mm). In Settings, choose Imperial (in) to display and enter decimal inches; fractional-inch input is not supported. This browser preference changes labels and inputs only: internal geometry, imported files, editable .embproj project values, and machine exports remain canonical millimeters. Switching units never resizes a design.

Select Measure, click the first point, move the pointer for a live preview, and click the second point to lock it. Distance, ΔX, and ΔY follow the selected unit immediately, while angle remains degrees. Snap to grid affects both points when enabled. Measurements are temporary canvas UI, are never saved or exported, and Esc clears the current measurement.

Tools in Draw

  • Select / Edit selects and transforms; Pan canvas moves the view.
  • Manual Stitch places one exact needle penetration per click, in order; Path makes an open clicked path; Region makes a closed filled area.
  • Rectangle and Ellipse are dragged regular shapes; Polygon creates a closed straight-sided region.
  • Text places a text object. Freehand / Pencil draws a gesture, while Pen / Bezier makes controlled curves.
  • Edit Points edits supported geometry. Shape Library opens reusable artwork.

Draw an object

  1. Manually choose a thread color; new drawn objects use the last manually picked color.
  2. Select a tool. Drag regular shapes and freehand strokes; click successive points for Path, Region, Polygon, or Bezier.
  3. Press Enter to finish a multi-point drawing, close by clicking near its first point where supported, or press Escape to cancel.
  4. Return to Select/Edit and adjust the object-specific settings.

For Manual Stitch, every click is an exact stitch point: Enter or double-click finishes, Backspace removes the last unfinished point, Escape cancels, and Snap to grid uses the shared grid when enabled. At least two points are required.

An open path is line work and can use running or satin-style settings where applicable. A closed region encloses an area for fill. Hold Shift while sizing a rectangle or ellipse when you want constrained proportions; Alt temporarily bypasses grid snapping during supported canvas gestures.
