You download an embroidery design and find five files inside the folder:

flower.pes

flower.dst

flower.jef

flower.exp

and perhaps several more.

They all seem to contain the same flower.

So why are there so many versions?

And which one should you put on your embroidery machine?

The short answer is:

Embroidery file formats are different ways of packaging machine-readable stitch instructions, and embroidery machines do not all understand the same formats.

But there is another important detail.

These files do not necessarily store exactly the same information.

One format may carry machine color indexes. Another may mainly contain stitch movements and color-change stops. A format intended for machine production may also preserve much less editable information than the original project used to create it.

That is why choosing an embroidery format is not only about the file extension.

It is about:

  • machine compatibility;
  • stitch data;
  • thread-color behavior;
  • hoop and design limits;
  • editing expectations;
  • production workflow.

What Is an Embroidery File Format?

An embroidery file is a digital description of a stitch design.

Depending on the format, it may contain information such as:

  • stitch movements;
  • jump movements;
  • color-change commands;
  • trim-related commands;
  • design dimensions;
  • machine-specific header information;
  • color indexes or palette references;
  • other production data.

What it does not necessarily contain is everything you saw while editing the design.

For example, your editable embroidery project might know that an object is:

  • a rectangle;
  • editable text;
  • a curved path;
  • a fill region;
  • a satin border.

The final machine file may contain only the generated stitch movements needed to sew those objects. Creating those instructions is called embroidery digitizing.

This leads to one of the most useful rules in machine embroidery:

Keep your editable source project. Treat machine files as production outputs.

A machine format is often the equivalent of a finished print file rather than the original editable artwork.

What Is the Difference Between an Image File and an Embroidery File?

A normal image format such as JPG or PNG stores visual information.

It describes pixels.

SVG stores vector geometry such as paths and shapes.

Machine embroidery formats describe how a machine should move and stitch.

For example, a PNG can say:

“There is a red circle here.”

An embroidery file needs to communicate something closer to:

“Move here, make these stitches, continue through this path, change thread, jump to another area, and continue stitching.”

That is why changing logo.png to logo.pes does not create a real embroidery design.

The most important column is not “Which format is best?” It is: Which format does your machine support?

If your machine requires JEF, exporting DST because someone says DST is more universal does not help if the machine cannot use that DST file.

Always check the documentation for the specific machine.

What Is a PES File?

A PES file is an embroidery format widely associated with Brother and Baby Lock workflows.

PES files contain machine-readable embroidery information and are commonly used to transfer designs to compatible embroidery machines or software.

A PES design can contain stitch movements, color sections, color-change information and machine-oriented embroidery data.

PES is often encountered together with PEC embroidery data.

PES can represent colors in a machine-oriented way, but that does not mean every arbitrary RGB color from your screen will survive as an identical physical thread color.

When should you use PES?

Use PES when your embroidery machine specifically supports or requests PES, your production workflow requires PES, or compatible manufacturer software expects PES.

Do not choose PES merely because the file exists in a download package. Choose it because it matches your machine or workflow.

Does PES preserve thread colors?

Distinguish between the RGB color used while designing, the machine format's color representation, and the real physical thread spool. These are not always the same thing.

Suppose your design uses #ED213A. The machine file may map it to the nearest available palette color, while your production thread is identified by manufacturer, product line and thread code. For precise work, keep that information separately.

What Is a DST File?

DST is one of the most widely recognized machine embroidery formats. It originated with Tajima embroidery systems and became extremely common in commercial workflows.

A DST file focuses strongly on the stitch path. It stores normal stitch movement, jump movement, color-change stops, design movement geometry and end of design.

What DST does not do well

Standard DST should not be treated as a file that preserves exact thread-color identity.

It can say “Change color here,” but it does not inherently say “Use this exact manufacturer's polyester thread, code 1720.” That belongs in a production sheet, thread chart or job record.

This is why DST files are sometimes displayed with unexpected illustrative colors. The important information is the sequence of color-change stops.

When should you use DST?

If you are starting with raster artwork, follow the complete image to DST workflow.

DST is useful when the receiving machine supports DST, a commercial shop requests it, broad compatibility matters, or the workflow manages physical colors separately.

Do not panic if a DST preview displays strange colors. First ask whether stitch sections and the color-change sequence are correct.

What Is a JEF File?

JEF is commonly associated with Janome and Elna workflows. A JEF file contains stitch data together with Janome-oriented machine information.

JEF uses indexed machine colors from a Janome palette. An arbitrary design RGB is mapped to an available machine color representation on export.

Why can JEF colors change after export?

A specific purple from a manufacturer chart cannot simply remain any unlimited RGB value. The exporter chooses an appropriate machine palette index, so the preview may show a somewhat different purple.

When should you use JEF?

What Is an EXP Embroidery File?

EXP is another stitch-oriented embroidery format, commonly encountered in Melco and Bernina-related workflows.

Like DST, stitch-focused EXP primarily concerns machine movements and command sequence: stitch movement, jumps, color-change stops, trim-related behavior and end of design.

Does EXP preserve exact thread RGB?

Do not rely on stitch-only EXP as a source of exact arbitrary RGB or physical thread identity. A design can contain correctly separated sections even though preview colors do not match the intended spools. Use production documentation when exact identity matters.

When should you use EXP?

Use EXP when your machine or workflow specifically expects EXP. Machine compatibility should decide the export format.

PES vs DST: Which Is Better?

“Better” is usually the wrong comparison. If your Brother machine requires PES, PES is better for that machine. If a commercial shop asks for DST, DST is better for that job.

Do not convert everything to DST merely because it is widely supported. Use the format requested by the destination machine.

DST vs JEF: What Is the Main Difference?

The biggest practical difference is target workflow and color representation. JEF is associated with Janome/Elna and uses machine color indexes. DST is generic and stitch-oriented and does not preserve exact physical thread identity.

If a Janome machine expects JEF, export JEF. If a shop asks for DST, supply DST. Both can originate from the same editable project.

PES vs JEF: Can the Same Design Be Exported to Both?

Yes, when software supports both formats. A project can be exported as design.pes and design.jef.

The geometric embroidery remains the same conceptually, but PES and JEF map colors through different machine-oriented systems. Preview colors can therefore differ even when intended physical threads are identical. This is normal format adaptation.

Why Do Embroidery Colors Change When I Convert Files?

There are three separate color systems.

1. Computer RGB color

Your design software can display millions of colors, such as #E82739.

2. Machine-file color representation

The destination may have a limited indexed palette, color-change stops without exact RGB, or other machine-specific restrictions.

3. Physical embroidery thread

The real thread has a brand, product line, code, material and physical color.

Those systems do not map perfectly. A preview should not always be treated as a thread purchasing guide. Record exact thread identity separately.

What Is a Color Change?

Suppose a design is:

  1. red circle;
  2. yellow text;
  3. red border.

It contains three thread sections and two transitions: red → yellow and yellow → red.

The final red section should not be merged with the first because another color separates them and they occur at different points in the sewing sequence. Embroidery color order is a timeline, not merely a list of unique colors.

Does DST Store Colors?

Not in the way most beginners expect. DST stores color-change stops, but not arbitrary exact RGB or a manufacturer's physical identity for each section. Software may assign illustrative colors. For production, a thread chart is especially valuable.

Does EXP Store Colors?

Stitch-only EXP has a similar practical issue. It preserves the sequence and color changes without exact arbitrary RGB/thread identity. Separate production information is safer for spool selection.

Do PES and JEF Store Exact RGB Colors?

Do not assume so. PES/PEC and JEF use machine-oriented color representations and map colors to available choices.

Ask instead: Is stitch geometry correct? Are sections ordered correctly? Are changes in the right locations? Is the intended production thread documented?

What Format Does My Embroidery Machine Need?

Check the machine's manual or official documentation. Compatibility can differ between models from the same manufacturer.

  1. identify the exact machine model;
  2. check supported embroidery formats;
  3. check supported hoop sizes;
  4. export one of those formats;
  5. verify the design on the machine before stitching.

If it accepts JEF, use JEF. If it says PES, use PES. If a production shop requests DST, give them DST.

Should I Keep PES, DST, JEF or EXP as My Master File?

Usually none should be your only master file. Keep the editable project whenever possible.

A machine file may lose original shapes, editable text, object settings, source artwork relationships, thread metadata and design construction logic.

The editable project is where you make future changes. The machine export is what you send to the machine.

Can You Edit a DST, PES, JEF or EXP File?

Software can often import machine stitch files and allow some editing, but that is not equivalent to opening the original project.

An original circle may have fill settings, underlay, stitch angle and thread assignment. After export, another application may receive mostly generated stitches. It can manipulate them, but the semantic object may no longer be available. Keep the project source.

Can You Convert PES to DST?

Yes, software can often read one format and export another. The workflow is not “Change the extension.”

  1. read source commands;
  2. reconstruct the stitch sequence;
  3. translate it to the destination;
  4. adapt information the destination cannot represent;
  5. write a valid machine file.

Some information, commonly thread colors, may not survive.

Can You Convert DST to PES?

Yes, but DST does not contain exact physical thread identities. Converting cannot magically recover information never stored in the source.

Conversion cannot restore information that the source file never contained.

Can You Convert JEF to PES?

Yes, with compatible software. The stitch path can be translated while format-specific colors are adapted. Do not expect identical indexes because the systems differ; keep the physical thread chart authoritative.

Why Does an Embroidery Design Change Size Slightly After Export?

Machine formats often represent coordinates using fixed physical increments, so values require rounding. A mathematical width of 115.83 mm might decode as approximately 115.8 or 115.9 mm.

Tiny quantization differences differ from a real geometry failure. A large size change, rotation, mirroring or distortion should not be dismissed as rounding.

What Should You Check After Export?

Do not stop at “the file downloaded successfully.” Validate the machine file when possible.

  • design width and height;
  • orientation;
  • stitch count;
  • thread-section and color-change counts;
  • jumps and trims;
  • machine-format limits;
  • end command;
  • decoded preview.

Compare the export to the source. An asymmetric design makes accidental mirroring easier to spot.

A Simple Format-Selection Decision Guide

Question 1: What does the machine require?

If it supports only one relevant format, the decision is made.

Question 2: Is a production shop requesting a format?

Give them the format they request.

Question 3: Does exact thread identity matter?

Keep a production thread chart regardless of format, especially with DST and EXP.

Question 4: Will you edit the design later?

Keep the original editable project.

Question 5: Are you sending files to several machines?

Export each required format separately from the same verified source. Do not repeatedly convert A into B, then B into C, if you still have the original.

Why Repeated Format Conversion Is a Bad Habit

Every conversion works with whatever survived the previous step.

A better workflow exports PES, DST, JEF and EXP individually from the editable project. Like photographs, use the original high-quality source rather than repeatedly editing copies.

A machine file answers: How should the machine stitch?

A production thread chart answers: Which physical threads should the operator use?

JEF and PES may map these to their machine palettes, while DST or EXP previews may display illustrative colors. None should overwrite the operator's three production-thread decisions. This separation matters in professional and repeatable work.

What About VP3?

VP3 is another embroidery machine format used in some ecosystems.

Sew Editor does not currently offer VP3 export. Do not assume an editor supports every format; check the actual export list.

Current supported machine exports are DST, PES, JEF and EXP. VP3 is planned for later and is currently unavailable.

Final Thoughts

PES, DST, JEF and EXP may represent the same visual design, but they are not interchangeable containers with different names.

Each exists within a machine workflow. They may store colors differently, expose different metadata, and none should replace the editable source project.

What does the machine need?

Export the machine format it supports.

Which thread do I physically load?

Use your production thread information.

Once those responsibilities are separated, embroidery file formats become much less mysterious.

You do not need to decide whether PES is universally better than DST or JEF better than EXP. Choose the right output for the destination.

Create the design once.

Keep the editable source.

Export the required machine format.

Validate it.
